Unit 10 HW 420

  • Review your unit 3 personal assessment of your psychological, physical, and spiritual well-being. Reflect on these areas .

    • How did you score yourself on a scale from 1 to 10 in unit 3? I think I scored myself as a 5-6
    • How do you score yourself now? the same
    •  Has the score changed? Why or why not? because I have spent all my time pretending to be a writer, talking about my feelings for the past 10 weeks

  • Review the goals and activities you set for yourself in each area. Have you made progress toward the goals? Explain. No because by the time im done answering the same three questions about these same areas the last thing I want to do is actually work on them.

  • Have you implemented the activities you chose for your well-being in each of the three areas? Explain. Yes, I continue to improve myself physically but not so much spiritually and psychologically although the exercises in meditation are helping. I'm doing them right now...

  • Summarize your personal experience throughout this course. Have you developed improved well-being? What has been rewarding? What has been difficult? How will this experience improve your ability to assist others?
  • Honestly, I don't know what I think about this course. I think it has some very helpful and useful information but the repetition of the assignments as a blog assignment literally have been a huge pain. Having to constantly reassess the same areas with the same exercises and the same question, over time have become tedious and hinders my motivation to anything wise involving this course. However, this course has revealed that the mind and body are most certainly connected and that trying to heal one without making sure the other s healthy would be doing a disservice to the individual involved.

    Final Project

Why is it important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually and physically? What areas do you need to develop to achieve the goals you have for yourself?

It is important for health and wellness professionals to develop these areas to help them to be able to listen with a clear mind and heart in order to fully connect with an individual. For me I am always seeking to further develop myself spiritually. There are so many negative stereotypes about being African American and Muslim it is a struggle sometimes to stay positive and to not get sucked into all the negativity.

How have you assessed your health in each domain? How do you score your wellness spiritually, physically, and psychologically?

I have assessed my health in each domain by the shear fact that I haven’t lost it on some of the dumb, inconsiderate people I come across. Laugh all you want but that’s a HUGE milestone! I think that my development in these areas have helped me to become a more patient and empathetic person as well as being less judgmental and more open minded. However, since I feel like I am still a work in progress on a scale of 1-10 (1 being nonexistent and 10-being a Zen master/saint with a six pack) I would score my Spirituality as an even 5, physical a seven (I do have an awesome 4-pack) and psychologically I would say I am a 4 because I still suffer from migraines due to anxiety induced insomnia.

List at least one goal you have for yourself in each area, Physical, Psychological (mental health) and Spiritual.

Physical- continue to train to make the 2020 Olympic Roller Derby team (Oh Yes! My friends-it’s a real thing)

Psychological (mental health) - to get my anxiety and therefore my insomnia under control without the use of SSRIs

Spiritual- to continue to be a positive spiritual role model for my family and friends (maybe all this awesomeness will eventually rub off on people in a pay it forward kind of way)

What strategies can you implement to foster growth in each of the following domains?

Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual: Training and playing derby honestly helps me in all three areas. It allows me to be physical in a world where it is often frowned upon when it comes to women. It’s become my place of Zen where I can let out all my aggressions and frustrations in a controlled environment. Also as much as I hate to admit it meditation has also helped me too psychologically and spiritually as well. At first I thought that taking the time to practice certain exercises like loving kindness or the subtle mind would be a huge pain but they’ve actually helped me to stay centered and clear minded.

How will you assess your progress or lack of progress in the next six months? What strategies can you use to assist in maintaining your long-term practices for health and wellness?

Physically I am constantly assessing myself but I think the real test will be if I can get my migraines under control and I am really committed to using some of the lessons learned in this class to continue to keep myself centered. I also plan to continue to educate myself whether it’s in or out of class to continue to develop myself spiritually and psychologically. The mind is a muscle and it must be regularly exercised to keep it sharp!

Loving Kindness, Subtle mind, Visualization, meditation exercises: Which is best for me?

I have determined that the subtle mind exercises are more beneficial to me because it allows me to less more proactive in stressful situations and less reactive. I find that I am a more patient person when I am faced with situations where losing my cool would not be helpful. I find that it also helps me when I'm dealing with individuals that I don't like or care to be around. The loving kindness practice sessions encourage me to be a more because I truly believe that you get what you put out and if you release negativity into the world you will receive it back. Some people perceive this as me being nonchalant but I am simply actively choosing which things, people and situations that warrant a reaction and which that do not. The subtle mind exercises really come in handy when my kids come home from school and they are both amped up and raring to go and  I am ready to settle down. I have two kid who could not be more different so they each warrant different approaches when motivating them to settle down to accomplish homework or when motivating them to get ready to attend their different activities. This can sometimes be the most stressful time of my day since its the period where I am most mentally and physically stressed. Getting upset and lashing out only makes things worse so it is important that I clear my mind to stay focused on the tasks at hand all while keeping a positive attitude so that my children don't feed off of any negativity that I may have.

    Meeting Aesclepius

For the record: I Hate Blogging! I'm really more of a type in a quick quip and click 'Post' kind of girl LOL! But oh well...here goes this weeks posts...

Okay, for my meditative practice this week I've noticed that my 'Zen" place is when I'm at the gym and skating. I do this a few times a week and I don't know what it is but when i strap on my pads and lace up my skates I feel like I'm allowed to be in my comfort zone. My happy place. I don't have to worry about if one of kids has a last minute project due, if I have any homework assignments that day, finances, family, relationships, etc. they all just fade away when I turn on my Ipod, crank up my tunes and just skate. It helps me to clear my head of all the garble that can muddle my thoughts and stress me out. plus, it helps me to increase my cardiovascular endurance and continue to be a kick ass roller derby player! Afterwards, I find that I'm in a much better mood thorough out the rest of the day.

I think that the saying "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself" refers to a person in the health profession prescribing or recommending a treatment to a patient that they themselves either doesn't believe and wan would use themselves. I feel that making a patient/or client believe in the efficacy of a treatment regimen is important in making getting the patient to be compliant with treatment. I do feel that health professionals do have an obligation to develop themselves psychologically, physically, and spiritually becasue it helps to know and acknowledge all aspects of  patients' lives that can affect their decision making and their coping skills.

    Renegade out.
